Montreal Neighbourhoods at a Glance
The Hochelaga-Maisonneuve neighbourhood is located on the eastern half of the island of Montreal. Despite being one of the poorest areas in the city, it is considered to be up-and-coming. In fact, HoMa, as its called by the locals, is in the process of becoming the “next Plateau”.
Known for its affordable housing, this family and community-oriented area features a dense collection of residential architecture that is unique to the city, including Beaux-Arts style buildings, the typical two- and three-story duplexes fronted by outdoor spiraling metal staircases, and majestic churches built from old factories.
In recent years, some of the vacant industrial buildings in the area have been converted into modern living spaces. Spacious lofts, condos and apartments in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve have given the neighbourhood a sense of rejuvenation.
